Expert Trigger Point Dry Needling at Melkbos Physiotherapy

Dry Needling is an effective physiotherapy treatment used to relieve muscular pain, reduce tension, and improve movement. It is commonly used to treat myofascial trigger points, often referred to as "muscle knots," which can cause local pain, referred pain, stiffness, and restricted movement.

At Melkbos Physiotherapy, all of our physiotherapists have received additional training in Trigger Point Dry Needling and incorporate this technique as part of a comprehensive assessment and treatment approach when appropriate.

What Is Dry Needling?

Dry Needling involves the insertion of very fine sterile needles into specific trigger points within a muscle. These trigger points are areas of tight, sensitive muscle tissue that can contribute to pain, reduced flexibility, and altered movement patterns.

The treatment aims to:

  • Release muscle tension

  • Reduce pain and discomfort

  • Improve mobility and flexibility

  • Restore normal muscle function

  • Assist with injury recovery

  • Improve overall movement and performance

Unlike injections, Dry Needling does not involve the use of any medication, which is why it is referred to as "dry" needling.

Conditions That May Benefit from Dry Needling

Dry Needling is often used to assist in the treatment of:

  • Neck pain

  • Back pain

  • Shoulder pain

  • Tension headaches

  • Sports injuries

  • Muscle strains

  • Hip pain

  • Knee pain

  • Sciatica-related muscle tension

  • Tennis elbow

  • Postural muscle pain

  • Chronic muscular tightness

Your physiotherapist will perform a thorough assessment to determine whether Dry Needling is suitable for your specific condition.

What Does Dry Needling Feel Like?

Many patients experience very little discomfort during treatment. When a trigger point is reached, you may feel a brief twitch response or a mild cramping sensation within the muscle. This is often considered a positive response and may indicate that the trigger point is being released.

Some mild muscle soreness may occur for 24–48 hours following treatment, similar to the feeling after exercise.

Is Dry Needling Safe?

Yes. Dry Needling is considered a safe treatment when performed by a qualified and appropriately trained physiotherapist.
At Melkbos Physiotherapy, we use sterile, single-use needles and follow strict hygiene and safety protocols to ensure the highest standard of patient care.
